Hi again everyone! So, where to begin, where to begin?
Over the past weekend I applied for another job – the third
of my search so far. I applied for two last November or so when there was a
possibility that I could start a job and finish my final semester elsewhere if
needed (like the best friend previously mentioned). One of them actually is at
the institution that I am currently at, and there is a lot going on with the
position so my application is just kind of hanging out with them. The other I
had a phone interview and a rejection email a month later. I wasn’t at all
surprised by the rejection; they seemed very confused over the fact that I
don’t have my Master’s degree yet – even though it was definitely in my resume
and HR information….Anyway, so I applied for another position over the
weekend…one that I absolutely love. It’s an amazing fit. So, we’ll see.
Next week I will be at the Creating Change conference in
Atlanta, which I am SO excited about! For those who aren’t familiar, Creating
Change is a national LGBT conference – so not just higher ed, but education is
definitely a key piece. This is my first national conference, so I’m a little
nervous about what to expect, but mostly I’m pumped. I’m also going to be
reunited with my co-intern and roomie from my summer internship, which I cannot
wait for! My co-intern and I got about as close as two folks could in the five
short weeks I was able to work (darn you quarter system), and we haven’t seen
each other since. Being reunited will be wonderful! I also am really looking
forward to networking with folks who are doing LGBTQ work in student affairs
across the country, as well as gaining some greater insight into the LGBTQ
world outside of higher education.
What else is going on? Classes started this week, and I’m
pretty excited about the semester academically. I have three classes – a
seminar on diversity, a seminar on current trends in higher education, and a
practicum course. For my practicum I’m working with an integrated learning
initiative at my institution, which is pretty awesome. I had my first major day
of working there today and absolutely love it. My diversity seminar has a ton
of people in it, which makes it difficult, but I’m really excited about the
course. My favorite faculty member teaches it, and I’m very passionate about
diversity and social justice issues so it will be a great opportunity. My
trends class will be a lot of work, but obviously very informative. I also
purposely waited to take it this semester so that I HAVE to be up on all the
trends for my job interviews since I’m doing it for class anyway – yay
multitasking!?
Right now I’m just trying to get settled into the semester
and wishing I had a time turner a la Harry Potter. Classes, practicum, GA,
studying for comps, applying for jobs, and attempting to maintain some modicum
of sanity and social life. Of course, there’s somehow still time for a 3 hour
dinner with great friends while discussing the ins and outs of “growing up” –
in which I learned all about wills and trusts and gifting your house! Woohoo!
Things I’m worrying about right now – really the conference.
What do I even wear every day? I’m not really a suit person. I want to make
sure I do everything “right” since many of my potential employers and
colleagues will be there. In addition to just what to wear, I also have a
question that I would like all our loyal readers out there to share their
thoughts on (or my friends who are reading this, haha) – thoughts about
piercings during a conference and/or interview? I know generally they are a no
in a lot of fields, but there’s a lot about this field that isn’t exactly
traditional. I don’t have anything too wild – four in each ear and a nose stud…remove
for conferences and/or interviews? Or leave? I’m leaning toward leave in
because they are a part of who I am, but would they be an immediate turn off?
Opinions appreciated.
Well, I suppose I will wrap things up for now – I mean, both
of my roommates just headed off to bed 20 minutes ago…and it’s 9:50 pm. Living
the dream. Until next time…
